26 Jan Despite Pandemic, 2021 WIHSEA Playoff’s a Success
The Wisconsin High School Esports Association could have looked at the plethora of barriers brought on by Covid-19 and not been faulted for taking a pass on the 2021 Playoffs. With some schools being virtual, some in-person or others with a hybrid approach, to the resulting difficulty of ensuring quality internet access – there were no shortage of items that could have prevented this perennial event from taking place.
But these barriers did not stop either Mike Dahle (President, WIHSEA), the 24 different teams, players and coaches or the variety of volunteers that stayed positive and flexible to make this year one of the most exciting tournaments to date.
Tournament Viewership Rises
As esports in the region continue to gain tremendous momentum, It’s no surprise that viewership for the tournament was on the rise in 2021.
According the organizations Twitch data, there were increases across the board in 6 of 8 key areas including Average Viewers, Maximum Viewers, Unique Viewers, Unique Chatters, Channel Followers and Subscriptions. In total, over 1,000 unique individuals watched the tournament during it’s 11-hour stream.
